Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day. You may be excited about a new relationship or that your kids are getting old enough to make the day fun! Or you may be frustrated because its just another day to spend unnecessary money out of your budget on junk that will be thrown away in a couple of months. Being a guy, I used to really despise Valentine’s Day for this reason. I mean, isn’t it a huge marketing ploy to get you to blow cash so the big companies can just cash in?

But then I started to look at it differently. Now, I don’t mind Valentine’s Day at all. In fact, I actually really enjoy it! Here’s why:

I credit my change of heart to when I met my wife, Cassy. Our first Valentine’s Day together, she surprised me with a really cool gift of some old paint-chipped rowing oars. They were the coolest thing (Restoration Hardware style for decoration) and I was excited to add them to my office. We spent the rest of the day together redoing a room in my house and making it a fun place to hang out and a workable home office room. Then I cooked dinner for her and we ended the day feeling like we had grown closer together. No restaurants, no cheesy teddy bears (well… one, but that’s a story for another time!). It was the best day!

When I started to think about the difference, I realized that we had taken the time to spend together. We (without realizing it) had added value to our relationship and grown closer. It was like a light had come on in my head. Valentine’s Day is like a fun excuse to work on your relationship in a fun way! Can you tell I’m a guy? Lol! I should have realized this years before, but I’m a little slow…

So… Here are a few ideas from Marriage Today’s Happy Happy Love book, that you can do together with very little cash, on Valentine’s Day!

Go to the library and find an old cookbook . Then go to the store and shop for the ingredients together. Head home and cook it up. Dine with fancy dishes and candlelight. Make it fun, but keep it simple too. Try to choose something that you can both work on. Be sure to give yourself some grace and keep it fun.

Sometimes a recipe doesn’t turn out like you think it will, but great stories come from experiences where things go wrong! You can make this super special by getting a baby sitter for the kids and dressing up like you’re going on a real date!

When was the last time you had your photograph made together — just the two of you? Hire a local photographer, dress up, and have fun! I have done this with a number of couples over the years and it really is fun! Especially when there’s really no reason to do it!

I love this one! Create your own progressive dinner. Enjoy appetizers at one restaurant, the full meal at another, then make one more stop for dessert or coffee. Cassy and I did this recently and it was a TON of fun! We’ll be doing it again soon I’m sure.
