“Family: A social unit where the father is concerned with parking space,
the children with outer space, and the mother with closet space.” ~Evan Esar
Cassy and I recently fell in love with the TV Show “Arrested Development” over a week of winter days while I was laid up on the couch recovering from a back injury. This show is hilarious! I can’t believe I haven’t seen it before. In the opening scene of the first season the main character, Michael Bluth and his 15 year old son George Michael are carrying on the following conversation:
Michael: “What is the most important thing?”
George Michael: “Breakfast.”
Michael: “Family! Family is the most important thing!”
George Michael: “Oh. I thought we were talking about food.”
I laughed and laughed at that exchange. It reminded me of so many conversations over the years with my family members. This could be verbatim a conversation between my brother Josh and I.
What is the most important thing about a family portrait?
Or what elements make a great family portrait? I get these questions everyday from clients who are thinking of having a family portrait created. Is it the outfits? It has to be the outfits. Is it the location? Maybe its the time of year? I know! – A great family portrait must be created at sunset. Right? Wrong. Well, what is the most important thing about a family portrait?
Family! Family is the most important thing!
The people who make up your family are what make a great family portrait. The love and relationships with these beautiful people who you cry with and laugh with, who you exchange germs and hugs with, are what make a great family portrait. Sure, location, time of day and clothing are all factors. However, these are small factors that pale in comparison to the people in your family.
Just Relax, family is the most important thing!
So when your thinking of having a family portrait created, be sure you put the emphasis in the right place. Your family. Don’t let the details ruin the experience for you. A good photographer will worry about all of those details. And even if something doesn’t go as planned (like it always does), don’t worry. Just wrap your arms around the wonderful people around you and feel the smile well up inside.![]()
